Museum of Farming Culture

The Church of San Giovanni

The Museum of Farming Culture (Museo della Civiltà Contadina) is housed in a deconsecrated church once dedicated to Saint John the Beheaded, which stands in the homonym square in old town centre of Calcata.

The building once housed the headquarters of a brotherhood consecrated to Saint John the Beheaded, hence the name of the church. Ever since the dissolution of the brotherhood in 1940, the church went through a progressive deterioration.

Then finally in 1992 the Museum of Farming Culture was founded here, with the purpose of both relaunching the church and of promoting local culture.

The exhibits

The very first display was made possible thanks to the donations of an antiquarian who offered the town some of the many objects collected throughout the years. Also a number of citizens resident in Calcata voluntarily partook in the realization of this first exhibition.

The museum’s collection has grown throughout the years, and today it conserves over 200 instruments of varying nature, dating back to the 1800s and the early years of the 1900s, most of which have been kindly donated by private citizens.

Part of the display also consists of a number of working tools which were once employed in the every-day country life of the Agro Falisco. Besides several instruments for working purposes, there are also ones for domestic use or for craftsmanship, and it is precisely here, in the section of the museum illustrating the artisanal activities, that an antique bread maker from the 18th century is conserved.

The farming culture

The perception which one has when entering the museum, is that of setting foot in an ancient cellar. This is the fundamental feature of such a display, which has been conceived so as to transmit an impression of a simple and genuine environment to the visitor.

The settings and exhibits one encounters throughout the museum’s itinerary, faithfully reflect those which have always qualified the rural traditions of the area. The museum stands for a place of local and collective memory.
