The WWF Oasi of Corchiano and Gallese: A walk in the open air between hidden paths and uncontaminated fields

The WWF Oasis Pian Sant'Angelo is a wonderful place to discover in more hidden Lazio region.

Here, you can come across secular oak trees, various types of orchids, anemones, cysts and cyclamens.

It is a wonderful but hidden place to be discovered in the heart of the Lazio Region. The reserve lies between the town of Corchiano and the one of Gallese, and almost 60% of its territory has been employed for cultivation purposes, mainly olive groves, vineyards, and fields of wheat or hazel trees. The remaining portion of land is covered by thick vegetation and wild unspoilt nature, like the climbing plants and contorted branches of the trees, distinctive of the forested area. The area in its entirety stretches out for over 250 hectares of terrain.

Traces left by time

The ravines cut through the whole area, and at their feet, on the moist ground, flow brooks and steams of water. Throughout the route, episodes of Faliscan history are gradually revealed to us: for instance, we come across the Faliscan aqueduct of “Ponte del ponte”, or the "del Capo" Tomb and then several necropolis carved into the tufa stone.

These ravines are, from a morphological point of view, unparalleled in the rest of Europe: deep gorges of volcanic tufa rock, delved in ancient times by the persistent flowing of the water courses.

The fauna

The features of such an environment, make of this oasis a place of shelter for those species which would elsewhere suffer the impact of human presence. One of these is the wild cat, extremely rare to come across, which has therefore become the symbolic animal of this territory. Other creatures to take refuge in this protected area are porcupines, badgers, skunks, wild boars, martens, Hermann’s tortoises and tree frogs. Another noteworthy animal presence is that of the fresh-water crayfish, an endangered species, which suffers the effects of pollution; a clear indication of the pureness of water courses in this area.

Also winged wildlife is rich here in species. You can catch sight of pheasants, quails, buzzards, kestrels, peregrine falcons, honey buzzards, sparrow hawks and hobbies. And then a number of nocturnal birds: long-eared owls, barn owls, tawny owls, common owls and horned owls.
